ENEMIES OF JESUS
By Stan L. Caldwell

PHARISEES: In Matthew 15 Jesus is condemning the Pharisees and scribes of His day for holding to the traditions of men rather than holding to the commandments of God. These men were worshiping in vain Jesus said (verse 9). We are not free to make up our own religion but we must have authority for what we do religiously. In Romans 10 Paul’s heart went out for the Jews because he said, “they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge”. Our religion must be laid out by Christ or we are His enemies.

SADDUCEES: These Jews rejected the resurrection of the dead (Matthew 22:23). Jesus in Matthew 22 and Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 show the fallacy of their position. The gospel is based on the resurrection of Jesus. The very doctrine these men preached destroyed their hope of salvation in Christ. These were enemies of Jesus.

HERODIANS: Mark 12:13 shows us these individuals were out to catch Jesus in His speech. They joined with the Pharisees in such an endeavor, asking if Jesus paid taxes. It seems the Herodians were loyal to Herod more than to righteousness. Jesus said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (verse 17). When men seek ill of others they are the enemies of Jesus.

THOSE WHO DO NOT OBEY HIM: In Matthew 7:21 we read, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven”. And Jesus asks the question in Luke 6:46, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” Those who do not obey Him are His enemies.

THOSE WHO PERSECUTE CHRISTIANS: Remember the words Jesus said to Saul or Paul on the road to Damascus? He said, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” (Acts 9:4). Who was Saul persecuting? He was actually persecuting Christians but in so doing He was persecuting Christ. When one persecutes those who belong to Christ, he is an enemy of Christ.

THOSE WHO TEACH DOCTRINES OTHER THAN HIS: 2 John 9 says, “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” Paul put it like this in Gal. 1:9, “If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received. Let him be accursed”. Preaching another doctrine other than Christ’s makes one an enemy of His.

NOW LET US ASK ARE YOU AN ENEMY OF CHRIST? If you will not obey the gospel you are. If you adhere to the doctrines of men that cannot be found in the Bible you are. If you deny plain teachings found in His word you are. If you are loyal to men more than to Him you are. If you persecute His people you are. If the above men were His enemies, so are such today. Let us turn from all such.
