In Genesis 2:18-25 we see the crowning act of God’s creation. God created woman and brought her to the man. We may not be as thankful to God as we should be for this final act of the creation week.

I. ADAM WAS ALONE. Adam had the earth and could till it until his body was exhausted. He had the plants and the animals about him. He could gaze at the heavens and see the sun, moon and stars and he could look to God who had created him. But he had not a mate comparable to him. He needed a helper, a companion, a mate. God saw that it was not good for him to be alone.

II. EVE WAS MADE OUT OF MAN. Eve was unique in the very manner of her creation. The other living things were made from the dust of the earth but Eve was made from the rib of Adam, while he slept and was then presented to man. Adam then described Eve saying, “this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Note the closeness of Adam and Eve. It is much like the relationship a mother, or even father for that matter, has toward their child, having come from their very body. The two are bound together. She was different from any other being on earth.

III. THIS SET A PRECEDENT FOR MAN. The text says (verse 24), “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” God made woman for man. He did not make man for man or woman for woman. Homosexuality or lesbianism is not God’s intent and never has been. He has never approved of such and has often condemned such with great displeasure. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah of Genesis 19 ought to show this. The statements of Romans the first chapter are as plain as can be in this regard. The Genesis account shows God’s intent from the beginning. The precedent God set in making man and woman is that from that time on man should leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. It is a man and his wife that God intends to be one flesh. This is God’s design and man sins in changing it.

IV. WHAT DOES YOUR WIFE MEAN TO YOU? Prov. 18:22, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.” God has blessed us in giving us one another. We should ever seek to fulfill our responsibility in the marriage relationship. We should make sure it is a scriptural relationship that is right in the sight of God. Too many are living in adultery or fornication without legal or scriptural rights to their mate. This is sinful and those who do such shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But when we are legally one, we should be most thankful to God for our mate, love and respect one another and encourage one another in what is right before God with all our heart. Has there ever been a greater blessing that God has given to man than woman? Let us ever give thanks for our wife!
