Obeying the Gospel
by Vernon Dunning

Isn't it interesting that the world will obey doctors, policemen, judges, mechanics, plumbers but they won't obey Jesus?

I. THE BIBLE TEACHES WE MUST OBEY THE GOSPEL TO BE SAVED.
  A. The gospel was preached to Abraham. Gal. 3:8, "And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying in thee shall all the nations be blessed."
  B. The gospel was preached by Jesus. Mark 1:15, "and saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, Repent ye, and believe the gospel."
  C. The gospel must be preached today. Mark 16:15, "And he said unto them, go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."
   1. The apostle Paul tells us in Rom. 1:15-16, "So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believeth, unto the Jews first and also to the Greek."
   2. Paul continues in 2 Thess. 2:14, "Whereunto he called you to our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."
  D. The gospel must be obeyed by all accountable people.
   1. Rom. 10:15 reads, "And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things."
   2. Paul tells us in 2 Thess. 1:7-9, "And to you who are troubled rest with us, When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power."
   3. 1 Pet. 4:17 reads, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God, and if it first begin at us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?"
  E. The gospel saves. Again Paul tells us in 1 Cor. 15:1-4, "Moreover brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand, by which also ye are saved, if you keep in memory what I have preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."

II. THE GOSPEL INCLUDES:
  A. HEARING: Acts 15:7, "And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe."
  B. BELIEVE: John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
  C. REPENT: Luke 13:3, "I tell you, nay: but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."
  D. CONFESS: Matt. 10:32, "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my father which is in heaven."
  E. BAPTIZE: Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned."
