INTRODUCTION: Controlling the tongue is the Christian's most difficult task Every young person is faced with the temptation to use bad language and it can take many forms.

I. Language that is irreverent of God. Heb. 12:28, Mt. 6: Lord's prayer.
A. God does not tolerate irreverent use of His name. In the Old Testament... God prohibited any to use His name in any oath that was not to be kept. See Ex. 20:7; Lev. 19:12; Deut. 6:13.
B. In this dispensation, God prohibits this use of his name at all. Mt. 5:33-37; Jas. 5:12.
C. Many "cuss" words or phrases use God's name irreverently.
D. There are many euphemisms for God found in our language. We should refrain from using these also.

II. Language that is characteristic of the lascivious mind, Eph., 4:28; 5:4.
A. Dirty jokes and stories.
B. Use of crude terms that are not in good taste in discussing legitimate subjects.
C. Language with implied sexual conotations.

III. Language that abuses others, Col. 3:8
A. Gossip (Talebearing) Lev. 19:16; Prov. 11:13; Prov. 26:20; 16:28
B. Slander - Prov. 10:18; 1 Tim. 3:11
C. Whispering - Rom. 1:29; 2 Cor. 12:20; Prov. 25:23
D. See Gal. 5:19ff for the attitudes that cause those sins.

IV. Language that is untrue, Col. 3:9; Eph. 4:25; Rev. 20:8
A. Lying
B. Flattery
