THEY ENTERED INTO A COVENANT TO SEEK THE LORD GOD
By Stan L. Caldwell

Could a greater determination ever be found than the covenant which King Asa and the children of Judah entered into? The prophet of God had spoken unto them saying, "The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him he will forsake you."

"And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God: For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves; And commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment", 2 Chronicles 14:2-4. Asa even removed his mother Maachah from being queen because she had made an idol in a grove. And Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron, 15:16. Besides this Asa renewed the altar of the Lord, 15:8. And they offered unto the Lord the spoil of their enemies, for the Lord gave them victory while their heart was right in seeking Him.

The Ethiopians came out against Asa and Judah and Asa cried unto the Lord his God. So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled, 14:9-12. So "they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God...with all their heart and with all their soul", verse 12. Verse 15 says, "And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the Lord gave them rest round about."

How does the Lord view us today? Have you entered into a covenant with the Lord to serve Him with all your heart? This should show in the manner in which you attend the services, give of your means to the Lord, live each day for Him, do all that you do with a view of pleasing Him in all things. This should show in the way you treat other people and the care you have for them, your speaking about them and your speech to them? Others should be able to see that you care for their well being.

This is not a question of your relationship with other people (though that is involved). This is a question of your relationship with God. Have you determined to seek the Lord, with all your heart? Are you determined to put away sin and evil attitudes that God does not approve and serve Him, seeking to lead others to Him? Are you determined to do that which is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God? Be sure that, "The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you", 15:2. When Asa heard these words he took courage, and put away the abominations of his day and offered sacrifice to the Lord and "entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God...with all their heart and with all their soul", verse 12. It continues in verse 13, "That whosoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman." What a desire and what a warning to all of us not of physical death for us but spiritual!
