Young People are not the Future of the Church
By Bryan Matthew Dockens

Folks mean well when they say it; I know that. They see a young brother or sister excelling in some spiritual endeavor and praise the youth, mentioning how it warms their heart to see a teenager stepping up to fulfill a certain duty in the church, and they emphasize their point by saying they truly believe these young people are the future of the church. They intend it as a compliment, but, in reality, are selling the younger generation short.

Truly, any person, young or old, who has obeyed the gospel through learning (Romans 10:17), faith (John 3:16), confession (Romans 10:9-10), repentance (Acts 2:38), and baptism (Romans 6:3-6) has, by that baptism, entered the body of Christ (1st Corinthians 12:13), which is the church (Ephesians 1:22-23). Any saved person, therefore, is in the church now. Thus, the Christian, regardless of age, is a part of the church's PRESENT.

Granted, each new generation must be encouraged to remain steadfast (1st Corinthians 15:58), and urged to finish what they've begun (2nd Timothy 4:7). They need to be motivated toward a fruitful future to be sure, but why wait?

Since "The glory of young men is their strength" (Proverbs 20:29; cf. 1st John 2:14b), they should be exhorted to implement their abilities immediately in God's service. "Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come" (Ecclesiastes 12:1).

The above article certainly caught my attention. It has a point. We are so proud of our young members. They have set their standard for serving the Lord as have the rest of God's people. However young or old you are physically, there is no greater desire in life than to serve the Lord faithfully till the day of your death. May God help us each to have and fulfill this desire!
