Is The Bible Inerrant?
By Wayne Seaton

There are some religions that would accept the Bible is the word of God but believe it has errors in it. Some claim that there are many truths that some denomination has removed leaving a void to be filled by their "latter day revelations". Some believe the Bible is a continuing history book that must be added to over time, of course by their teachers almost always about the "end-times".

A couple of weeks ago we showed the Bible to be the word of God. If the Bible is the word of God, then it must share the characteristics of God, its author. God is perfect, therefore His word must also be perfect as it set forth the perfect mind of God to man. Duet. 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He. God is infinite in wisdom and is perfect; therefore His word is a product of that infinite and perfect mind. Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. God is infinite in power. Therefore His word must reflect that infinite and Divine power. Rom. 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." God is eternal; therefore His word must be eternal. Mt. 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

However, the perfection of the Bible is seen not only in what it includes, but also in what it leaves out. The Bible omits the current fads in thinking of men in learning and science. Think of all the errors accepted and believed in the ancient world over the nearly 1600 years it was written. It was not until Christopher Columbus was trying to find a new trade route to the West Indies that he proved the world was round. The prevailing thought was the Columbus would fall off the end of the world. Yet the Bible tells of facts that have only been discovered in relatively recent days. The Bible speaks of the circle of the earth (Is. 40:22), it explains the water cycle of the earth (Amos 5:8), it talks about paths in the sea (Ps 8:8). Ancient myths portray the earth as being upheld by Atlas or Hercules or by giant elephants or on the back of a giant tortoise. Consider what the Bible records ignoring the current myths of the day. Job 26:7 He stretches out the north over empty space; he hangs the earth on nothing. This thinking would have been held in derision to the learned of the day. Yet the Bible has been vindicated in its perfection.

Think of all the scientific errors that were believed throughout time which were omitted from the Bible. Samuel Arbesman wrote a pretty nerdy work entitled Half of the Facts You Know Are Probably Wrong; Why Everything We Know Has An Expiration Date. Ronald Bailey reviewed Arbesman's work in an article written at http://reason.com/archives/2012/12/24/half-the-facts-you-know-are-probably-wro. He writes, In the past half century, all of the foregoing facts have turned out to be wrong. The foregoing facts he mentions were listed at the beginning of the article. Here are a few of the known facts that have been proven to be false: Dinosaurs were cold-blooded; most of the DNA in the human genome is junk; saccharine causes cancer and a high fiber died prevents it; stars cannot be bigger than 150 solar masses. Bailey goes on to give Arbesman's credentials and work. Fact-making is speeding up, writes Arbesman, a senior scholar at the Kaufmann Foundation and an expert in scientometrics, the science of measuring and analyzing science. As facts are made and remade with increasing speed, Arbesman is worried that most of us don't keep up to date. That means we're basing decisions on facts dimly remembered from school and university classes—facts that often turn out to be wrong.

While there is no evidence that the half-life of a particular discipline is declining geometrically, the fact remains that half of everything we know as fact in science will be proven to be false in a few years. The example given in the article is the half-life of everything known about liver disease is 45 years. How does this relate to the inerrancy of the Bible? The Bible was written over a period of about 1600 years and its record was completed about 100 AD with the book of Revelation. Yet there have been no errors discovered with the facts given in the Bible. Some parts of the Bible are believed to have been written 2500 BC, the book of Job being the oldest. Think about the facts given in the Bible. The Bible is neither a science book nor a history book; however all it reveals about science and history are perfect in its detail. There have been zero errors found in the facts it gives. The book of Acts is the historical record of the establishment and growth of the church. Many facts were given about the Roman Empire listing rulers and people in office, yet there have been zero errors in this data or in any other discipline given in the Bible. No other work comes with such attestation, proving it to be the inerrant product of God's mind given to man.

2 Pet. 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. The Bible truly is a product of the perfect God who gave it, therefore it is perfect.

Peter gives the significance of having an inerrant scripture. 1 Pet. 1:22-25 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed with is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For, "All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, but the word of the Lord endures forever." And this is the word which was preached to you.
