GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
by Stan Caldwell

There is much that we can learn about getting along with God. Jesus’ statements in Matthew 22:37 says it all that we should love the Lord our God with all our being; heart, soul and mind. Love is the key to both human and Divine relationships. Do you really love God as you should?

1. OBEDIENCE: Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments”, John 14:15. This is where one starts his relationship with God. Faith, repentance and baptism are essential to such a relationship. Matthew tells us we are baptized into a relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 28:19. If you are not obedient to God you have no hope and no good relationship with God. Cornelius was commanded to be baptized, Acts 10:48. Have you done at least that?

2. CONSTANCY: Jesus said, “I do always those things that please Him”, John 8:29. For a good relationship with God we must be constant in our service to the Lord. If you serve God faithfully one day and ignore Him the next, how can you hope to please Him? If you attend one service but forsake other services can you say you fulfill Heb. 10:25? Are you constant in your service to Him? Do you “always” do those thing that “please Him”?

3. GLORIFY GOD: We do this by worshiping Him: praise Him in song, pray to Him sincerely, proclaim the death of Christ in partaking of the Lord’s Supper each Sunday, give freely and generously into the treasury, etc. By your very life you either glorify Him by walking in His ways or you dishonor Him by walking in sin. Can men see Christ in you, Gal. 2:20? By the way you talk to others about Him you can glorify Him. By the things you allow your mind to dwell on you glorify Him or not! Glorifying Him builds a good relationship with Him!

4. TRUST: Jesus said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”, Matt. 6:33. We bind our relationship to God by putting our trust in Him. David said in Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” We are to trust God for what we need in this life and for eternity. Where is your trust? This shows your relationship with the Lord. Your prayer life will show this!

5. STUDY: The only way we can have a good relationship with the Lord is to listen to the Lord. We have no relationship with those we do not listen to. Read your Bible if you would draw nigh unto God. How else will we be determined to do His will, if we do not hear Him? The way He communicates with us is through His Word. Do you think your mate would be happy with you if you never listened to them? Do you think God is pleased if we do not read our Bibles?

6 SERVING OTHERS: One cannot have a good relationship with God unless he treats others as he would be treated. Think of Jesus’ teaching us to pray, “Our Father…forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”, Matt. 6:9,12. Jesus came, “to seek and to save that which is lost”, Luke 19:10. If you want a good relationship with God, lead others to God! Let us love God!
