I talked to a woman awhile back that had had some physical problems and she said she became angry with the Lord saying, “Why Me?” She seemed ready to give up on the Lord and serving Him. I talked to another the other day and he said he was angry at members of the church where he was attending because they were not helping him out financially as he thought they should. He was ready almost to give up on serving the Lord unless the Lord blessed him with financial matters. We fear for children who have too much of this worlds goods lest they become materialistic and fail to depend on the Lord. Could it be that the Lord has blessed us too much and we are spoiled?

Proverbs 30:8-9 says, “Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.” I do fear having too little in this life is an incentive to many to depart from the Lord and give themselves over to crime to gain. But also we have been so blessed with so much that I fear we are content in life and see no great need to serve the Lord. How much heart do you put into the worship? How much do you give to the Lord? How important are spiritual things to you? If your child was dying of cancer would you not pray? If your house was about to be foreclosed would you not pray? If your table was bare and there was nothing in the refrigerator and the stores were empty would you not pray? But with the children healthy, the house payment made and the food overflowing the table, how much do we pray? Has the Lord blessed us too much?

I do not want God to bring harm upon us. I just want us to be thankful and I do want us to draw nigh unto God and I do want us to live not just for today but for eternity and I do want us to glorify God for he has blessed us both physically and spiritually. We see countries that are generally poverty stricken as Haiti and others. This has not necessarily made them more spiritually minded. We see our land as one blessed greatly in general and it has not kept us from wickedness that only money can promote.

When you are discouraged from multiplied problems or when you are blessed exceedingly, do not think the Lord has left you but count yourself blessed that He is over all and that you can look to Him for time and eternity. In whatever situation you find yourself count your blessings and realize that the greatest of them is God. It is like a man having a million dollars and because he does not have a million and three hundred dollars he throws away the million that he has. How can men throw away God because they do not have something they want? Our materialistic views may have turned us away from God. It is not wealth that turns men from God but the love of wealth. It is not poverty that destroys men but their failure to rely on God. There is something more than the physical. There is the spiritual. Let us, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”, 1 Thessalonians 5:18. In every situation in life there is something for which we can be thankful. God has blessed us with all His heart. It is up to us to return unto Him our lives, our love, out devotion.
