RENEWING OUR FAITH
Invitation by Vernon Dunning, Jan. 27, 2010
Vernon Dunning

The definition of Renew is to make new or as if new again; Restore, to take up again; Resume, to repeat so as to reaffirm.

I. As we begin this New Year, we need to reflect on several truths we have believed for years.

II. This lesson is an opportunity for us to renew our faith.
A.For some it will be an opportunity to “make new again their faith. Paul writes in 2 Cor. 4:14-16: “Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
B.For others it will be an opportunity to “take up again” their faith. Paul tells us in Heb. 6:4-6, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
C.For some it will be an opportunity to “reaffirm” their faith. Paul lets us know in 2 Tim. 1:11-14, “Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.”

III. Renewing our faith involves “our faith”. Rom. 10:17 reads: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

IV. We can renew our faith by remembering:
A.God is the object of our faith.
1.God is our father. Mark 11:22 says, “And Jesus answering saith unto them, have faith in God.” Heb. 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in me.”
2.Jesus is Lord. Matt. 28:18 tells us, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”. Matt. 7:21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
3.The Holy Spirit is our helper through the written word. Rom. 8:14-16 lets us know, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”

B.The Bible is the standard of our faith.
1.It is inspired. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 reads, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
2.It is indestructible. Matt. 24:35 TELLS US: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” 1 Pet. 1:24-25, “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” John 12:48, “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

C.Salvation is the result of our faith.
1.Salvation is by grace. Eph. 2:8-10 reads, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
2.Salvation is by obedience. Heb. 5:8-9 says, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him”. Rom. 6:17-18, “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
3.Salvation is by death. The apostle Paul in 1 Cor. 15:1-3, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures”. He continues in Rom. 6:3-4, “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

D.True worship is the expression of our faith.
1.We worship God. John 4:23-24 tells us, “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

E.Christian living is the outcome of our faith.
1.We are to live spiritual lives. Rom. 12:1-2 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
2.We are to live moral lives. 1 John 2:15-17 tells us, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
3.We are to live influential lives. Matt. 5:16 lets us know, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
